Fighting Disinformation and Abuse with Artificial Intelligence

In todays information environment we see abuse, harassment, propaganda and worse with little to no effort from the platforms themselves to remove it. Abusive content is reported, and it remains. The accounts continue to harass others, post hateful nonsense and keep up the same crap... not any more. We have recently started using Grok, the #AI powered helper on the X platform, to fight abuse and disinformation and its a game changer.

When I first started working to counter hate and extremism around 2015 efforts were geared toward countering terrorist recruitment and propaganda. We worked alongside groups like Ghost Security Group and CTRL SEC for years with great success. At the time the platform was reasonably responsive to reports regarding such. But as is with all things, as time goes by, they change. Victory in battle goes to those who are able to quickly adapt to the ever changing environment. Be like water. As Bruce Lee explained, have no form. The water takes the shape of its surroundings. If in a Tea Pot, it takes the shape of the pot. If in a drinking glass, it takes this shape. If you pour water out of the glass it will take the path of least resistance.

As time went on, and management changed.. more abuse and harmful content has been tolerated on the X platform. X is now the worlds leading publisher of hate and disinformation. Despite the increasing difficulty countering such abuse, work continued. But the amount of effort required to bring about action was ridiculous and unacceptable. Be like water. We had an idea. Why not use Artificial Intelligence in some way.. to counter the hate, disinformation and abuse we all face here? So we did! The game has changed and the trolls have nowhere to hide!

In a previous blog article, "NAFO Fire-Mission 001" we wrote about a group of pro ruzzian trolls who target communities and individuals supportive of Ukraine. Same as any other bottom tier trolls, their abuse was reported. Some limited action taken by the platform. But in the last few days as of the publishing of this blog, we have taken out more of their accounts, than cups of coffee I drink in a day! And I drink a LOT of coffee! We edited a fun video to laugh about it all featuring a few of the downed accounts at the end. Check out the video below! As always only possible with a massive additional community effort, but hopefully this dynamic will also change. It should NOT take an army, to deal with one troll.

What we have been doing so far is simply asking Grok if a post is in violation of the platforms rules including an explanation of the context surrounding the post. Grok explores and explains even including legal context surrounding possible criminal implications! Next we use the desktop web interface, a browser rather than the app, and fill in the form accordingly! Then we include a share link from our conversation with Grok and send it downrange! Below is a quick example and our fun video! We are not sure where this road will take us, but there is only one way to find out. Many small steps, add up to a large journey.
