The Laws of the Lot - How to Prevent Lot-Burn

I'm by no means a professional stunt rider. As you can see by my wheelie practice videos, I'm just a dork on a dirt bike who is having fun learning. When I got back on a bike after an injury years ago, I wasn't expecting to find such an amazing community. My adventures eventually took me to Battle Creek Bike Night with Horizon Riderz and a number of stunt lots in Battle Creek where folks actually had either expressed permission to ride or a general okey-dokie from whoever.Â
Recently I heard rumors that one of the lots have been shut down by law enforcement and though it hasn't yet been confirmed, it sucks to hear when it could have been easily avoided. Ladies and germs, this: The loudest person in the room is the most dangerous person in the room. When we have anything close to permission to be hooligans at a spot, and some very cool cops say they don't care as long as we don't piss anyone off or get hurt.. then we spit in their face by ignoring said rules and acting like we own the area... that spot is not going to last very long.
There is no reason we can't have our fun, be safe and work with the community rather than against them. We have already done stunt rides, including wheelies on the streets.. escorted by the police. They were willing to join our little Birthday wheelie parade at Baily Park and there's no damn reason things can't continue in that direction, other than stupidity.Â
Something important to consider, not all cops are out there power trippin' and trying to ruin your life. They are first responders. When we get into an accident on the road, if we are lucky they are the ones helping us into the ambulance. When we are not so fortunate.. they are the ones who have to deal with the aftermath and contact family.Â
They don't want to deal with that shit. A little respect goes a long way. Learn from the mistakes of others.. especially when those mistakes could lead to loss of life or motorcycle.
I decided to write this article to hopefully preserve any remaining stunt lots we may have permission to ride.. to maybe prevent tragedy and with any luck, to keep our community safe & moving in the right direction.
Common sense Laws of the Lot:Â
- Keep the shenanigans AT THE LOT!!! Not in the neighborhood as you roll out. Not in the streets on the way to the lot. Not at the entrance to the lot in plain sight of traffic... AT THE LOT WHERE THE GENERAL PUBLIC CANT SEE OR HEAR YOU! Even if you are not ON a main road.. if you are visible you are a possible dangerous distraction to drivers.
- No drifting cars and no burnouts. Its not a race track and the burnouts are considered property damage.
- No rev bombing. It attracts attention and pisses people off!Â
- If you are going to post pics or video from a stunt lot on social media, avoid having anything in the background like a factory or water tower that can be easily geo-located when Super-Karen spots your post and decides to get her snitch on.
- If you aren't street legal, trailer it in! Dem bois are cracking down on unregistered vehicles on the road.. among other things...
- Don't be a litter bug! Clean up after yourself!
Pretend for a moment if you will, that what you are doing... is against the law, and act accordingly.
Do what you wish, free will is a heck of a drug and I aint yer' daddy.. but I'm also not crying about having no place to do wheelies on Sunday. All it takes is one turd in the punch bowl to ruin the party for everyone. Don't be a turd.
If you find any of the above useful, please share!
